Artist ilan Laks will be assembling an exhibit and event at a high profile space in Los Angeles (TBD). For decades, Laks has been perfecting his process and creating marks for his large scale works. For this new endeavor, Laks will be using clothing, and objects as well as his massive pieces, allowing his work to move, breathe, travel and permeate the space.
These works are not mere painted clothes, rather they are original paintings that use clothing as canvas. Laks has come up with a technique that produces a non fading, flexible, washable, unique garment. The works receive a new sense of literal life since they will move and shift with the wearer.
Laks would like to use a fashion show/art opening to unveil these recent works. In the space, his large-scale paintings on birch panels will be hung on the walls along with vitrines containing his wearable paintings. The show will be aptly named, Body of Work and will be on display for two months. The goal is to have the opening take place in Spring/Summer 2012. On opening night, he will have artists and models don the clothing.
There will be a DJ and musicians all wearing the paintings, plus video screens showing time lapse footage of the making of Body of Work. All the clothes, objects, and paintings will be available for sale. Laks has built up an impressive inventory of paintings, clothes, and objects covered in his signature Galactic Infinity, as well as extensive video of him creating the works.
Without funding, the visibility of these works will be vastly limited. The funding for this project will be used to rent a high-profile venue to display the work and host opening night, as well as provide compensation for the talented performers who will participate in the opening.
